Set in colonial India between 1854 and 1878, Ranabaali tells the story of a fierce freedom fighter and his wife. Rahul explained that he wanted the wedding sequence to reflect the simplicity and permanence associated with marriages of that time. When Vijay and Rashmika walked onto the set in their wedding costumes, the director felt they did not look like actors performing – but like a bride and groom transported from history. The frame was shot with minimal lighting, a plain backdrop, and no stylised posing to preserve its honesty.
