Tamil Films' What-Ifs: From Nayanthara to Shruthi Hassan Who Missed Casting Opportunities in Popular Tamil Films

Nayanthara in Paiyaa: Paiyaa continues to be a beloved film in Tamil cinema, largely due to its memorable songs and the captivating chemistry between its lead actors, Karthi and Tamannaah. However, director Linguswamy recently disclosed that his initial choice for the female lead was Nayanthara. The filmmakers approached Nayanthara and requested her to lower her remuneration for the film, but she did not consider it necessary. Instead, Nayanthara opted to allocate her dates to Suriya's Aadhavan, leading to Tamannaah ultimately securing the role in Paiyaa.

Keethy Suresh in Ponniyin Selvan: The specific role that Keerthy Suresh was offered in Mani Ratnam's highly anticipated film Ponniyin Selvan remains undisclosed. However, it is known that the actress turned down the part. This decision raises the question of what factors may have influenced Keerthy's choice to decline a film with a renowned director that was expected to be a guaranteed success. The answer lies in the clash of schedules with another major project featuring Rajinikanth. As both films were being shot simultaneously, Keerthy had to make a difficult choice between the two, ultimately opting for the Rajinikanth-starrer over Ponniyin Selvan.

Shruti Hassan in Mookuthi Amman: According to director RJ Balaji, he initially approached Shruti Haasan, a close friend, for the role eventually portrayed by Nayanthara in Mookuthi Amman. Shruti was enthusiastic about being a part of her friend's film and readily agreed to take on the role. However, fate intervened in an unexpected manner. Nayanthara contacted the director and inquired why he hadn't approached her for the film. This conversation ultimately led to Nayanthara securing the role of Amman in the film, altering the course of casting decisions. 

Trisha in Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kaadhal: Trisha and Nayanthara, two prominent actresses in the industry, have often been compared and pitted against each other for over a decade. Thus, when Vignesh Shivan conceived the idea for the film Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kaadhal, which required two equally powerful female roles, he initially considered casting both Trisha and Nayanthara. However, due to various reasons, the collaboration did not materialize, and the role eventually went to Samantha. 

Sai Pallavi in Kaatru Veliyidai: Sai Pallavi, who had admired Mani Ratnam since her childhood, was ecstatic when the renowned filmmaker approached her for the role of Leela in Kaatru Veliyidai. In an interview, the actress disclosed that discussions about her involvement in the film had been ongoing for approximately six months. However, according to reports, Mani Ratnam ultimately felt that Sai Pallavi appeared too young for the character. As a result, his search for the role of Leela concluded with the casting of Aditi Rao Hydari.
