2023 Proves To Be A Remarkable Year For Tamil Cinema
The year 2023 has emerged as a golden year for Tamil cinema, witnessing both record-breaking box office collections and the release of high-quality films. While movies featuring leading heroes continue to entertain fans, new directors have also made their mark with low-budget films that have achieved remarkable success.
In the last six months, several low-budget films such as Love Today, Good Night, and Por Thozhil have received exceptional reception and collected substantial box office earnings. A recently released list of the top 5 opening day grossing films in the last 6 months has gone viral on social media, with Ajith's Thunivu leading the pack by amassing ₹24.59 crore on its opening day.
"Ponniyin Selvan 2" secured the second spot on the list with a collection of ₹21.37 crore. Although Vijay's "Varisu" remains the highest overall grosser, it acquired the third position by collecting ₹19.43 crore on its opening day. Notably, "Maaveeran," released just two days ago, earned an impressive ₹7.61 crore and secured fourth place on the list.
Udhayanidhi's "Mamannan," released a few days prior to the list's release, earned ₹7.12 crore, positioning itself in fifth place. Following closely, Dhanush's "Vaathi" and Simbu's "Pathu Thala" films acquired the sixth and seventh spots, collecting ₹5.80 crore and ₹5.63 crore, respectively, on their opening days.

As the details of the top-grossing films on their second day of release surfaced, Sivakarthikeyan's "Maaveeran" remarkably outperformed Thalapathy Vijay's "Varisu." While "Varisu" collected ₹8.75 crore on its second day, "Maaveeran" surpassed it with an impressive ₹9.34 crore. "Ponniyin Selvan 2" and "Thunivu" continue to dominate the list, securing the first and second places with ₹20.16 crore and ₹14.32 crore, respectively.
"Maaveeran": A Journey From Cowardice To Courage
The film revolves around cartoonist Sathya, who lives in a slum with his mother and younger sister. When the government announces the eviction of the residents of an apartment complex, Sathya, known for his timid nature, reluctantly accepts the situation, leading to a series of life-altering events.
Facing personal loss and emotional turmoil, Sathya contemplates suicide, but a surreal encounter with the voice of his own cartoon character becomes a turning point. The film beautifully narrates how this transformative experience shapes the once fearful Sathya into a true "Maaveeran" (Hero) in life.
