Vijayakanth, the founder of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and a prominent figure in Tamil cinema and politics, passed away in Chennai at the age of 71 due to complications arising from pneumonia and COVID-19.
Starting his career in Madurai as Vijayaraj, he rose to fame in the film industry under the screen name Vijayakant. Known as 'Captain' after his role in the film "Captain Prabakaran," he later ventured into politics, challenging established parties in Tamil Nadu.
In his political journey, he notably secured a significant vote share in the 2006 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, later becoming the Leader of the Opposition with the DMDK. His funeral, scheduled with state honours, will take place at the DMDK headquarters in Koyambedu at 4.45 p.m. The public can pay their respects at Island Grounds and during the procession along Poonamallee High Road.
