Vijayakanth's Death: The loss of Vijayakanth, both a distinguished political figure and a charismatic actor in the Tamil film industry, is deeply felt today. Affectionately known as "Captain" by many, the leader of the DMDK passed away at 71, leaving behind a significant legacy.

Vijayakanth's passing was confirmed by officials from Miot Hospital, where he was admitted and was treated with ventilator support.

In the initial bulletin released on Thursday, the hospital confirmed Vijayakanth's positive Covid-19 diagnosis and his requirement for ventilator support. A subsequent bulletin later confirmed Vijayakanth's passing.

Previously, Vijayakanth had been hospitalized in November due to pneumonia and was discharged following nearly three weeks of treatment.

On December 14, he made his first public appearance since his discharge, participating in the DMDK's executive and general council meeting. During this gathering, his wife, Premalatha Vijayakanth, was appointed as the party's new general secretary.

Like Superstar Rajinikanth, Vijayakanth also proved that one's skin color isn't a barrier to achieving superstardom. Vijayakanth embarked on his artistic journey in 1979 with movies like "Inikkum Ilamai" and "Agal Vilakku," ultimately starring in around 152 films, culminating with "Engal Aasaan" in 2009. His 100th film, "Captain Prabhakaran," directed by the renowned RK Selvamani in 1991, earned him the revered title of "Captain."

This landmark film marked a turning point, leading to his endearing moniker, "Captain," embraced by his admirers. The outpouring of condolences from many reflects the profound impact he had on his family, supporters, and the wider community.

With an illustrious career in Tamil cinema before entering politics, Vijayakanth has been a significant figure in the state's political landscape. His transition from a successful actor, producer, and director to a prominent political figure led him to establish and lead the DMDK as its chairman in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly.

Vijayakanth's political journey includes two terms as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, representing the constituencies of Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam. His role as the founder and key figure in the DMDK has marked him as a crucial presence in Tamil Nadu politics, garnering both support and attention across the state.
