In "Vaazhai," a twelve-year-old boy named Sivanandhan, along with his mother, sister, and friend, faces life's challenges, with a plantain tree (Vaazhai) playing a central role in their journey.
The production of "Vaazhai" commenced in November 2022 and is Mari Selvaraj's fourth feature film following "Paraiyerum Perumal," "Karnan," and "Maamannan." This film marks the third collaboration between Selvaraj and cinematographer Theni Eswar, who previously worked together on "Karnan" and "Maamannan." It also features Nikhila Vimal's first project with Mari Selvaraj. Filming took place extensively across Tamil Nadu, including in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli.

Produced by Sajith Sivanandan, Divya Mari Selvaraj, Mari Selvaraj, and Dhilip Subbarayan under Navvi Studios, Disney+ Hotstar, and Farmer's Master Plan Production, the film showcases cinematography by Theni Eswar. The music, composed by Santhosh Narayanan and with lyrics by Yugabharathi, enhances the film's depth. Kumar Gangappan oversaw the art direction, Dhilip Subbarayan choreographed the stunts, and Sandy Master directed the dance sequences.
Mari Selvaraj devoted considerable effort to crafting the film's story, which is regarded as one of his finest works. His previous film, "Maamannan," a political thriller starring Udayanidhi Stalin, Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil, and Keerthy Suresh, was met with significant success.
