Aval Story

Aval (2017) is a trilingual Horror movie direction by Milind Rau. The movie has Siddarth, Andreya and Atul Kulkarni in the lead roles. Produced by Siddharth’s Etaki cinemas and Viacom. Girish Gopalakrishnan of Sivakarthikeyan's Marina fame has composed music for this movie. Aval will also release in Hindi as The House Next Door and Gruham in Telugu. The movie Aval story is set in the backdrop of a haunted house. A neurosurgeon (played by Siddharth) and his wife (played by Andrea Jeremiah), a newly-wed couple move into a new neighborhood. The couple’s family get affected due to the paranormal activities caused by a ghost in the house next door.

The News Minute

The actors are all mostly on the money. Siddharth is convincing in the role of a dashingly confident surgeon who suddenly sees his world falling apart, as is Andrea as his wife. Anisha plays the haunted teenager to the hilt. The film is not perfect, however. When it finally gets to its big reveals, you can’t help but feel a bit let down at the reasons behind all the madness. The climax also struggles to maintain the tension that it so carefully built up early on.

The film is atmospheric and genuinely scares you. Even the events which detail a character’s exorcism are all the more frightening as they are not clichéd and predictable. As promised, Milind and Siddharth, fans of pure horror cinema, create the kind of horror experience that’s original given Tamil cinema standards.

The film wastes no scene in telling us about who these young man and woman are. The scintillating track “Kaarigai Kanne” explains the evolution of their relationship from strangers to a married couple without the usage of too many words. The subtle humor which is present in the beginning, in the form of conversations and visuals, fades away with the arrival of the ghost (or ghosts). Aval is hauntingly good, for the story has genuine moments of surprise, and, with actors putting their best foot forward, this is the movie of the season.

For those who are annoyed by irritating comedies in Tamil horror films, Aval could come as a whiff of fresh air. It is meticulously detailed and has been made with the sole focus to scare people. It would be no less than fascinating for horror film lovers. Verdict: Honestly made horror thriller that has its moments.

Two families have a tough time dealing with a revenge-seeking spirit, which is strangely connected with one of its members. A lion's share of horror films follow a similar pattern in flashback stories, the revenge pattern and in spirit possession. Aval doesn't have an all-new story which we haven't seen or heard.
