The movie has equal dosage of realism and commercialism blended well to give viewers a unique North Madras experience.

The wall in the middle of a housing board complex becomes the crux of the story. The feud between two warring parties on who takes control of the wall pretty much forms the one-liner. There is a lot of blood, tears, love, laughter, politics, revenge and deceit weaved into this seemingly simple and engaging story.

The wall represented as an object of power and authority play a key role in the movie.

Most of the film's shooting was done in localities in and around the north part of the city, namely Kasimedu, a locality in the Royapuram area of north Chennai, Otteri and Perambur. Filming was wrapped up by June 2014.The film is scheduled for release on 26 September 2014.

Casting

Reports initially suggested that Nazriya Nazim would portray the leading female role in the film, while Nithya Menen and Lakshmi Menon were also linked to the role. Later in October 2013, Catherine Tresa was finalised to be the female lead in the film, thereby making her debut in Tamil films with the project.

The team had initially titled the film as Kabali, but later opted to change it to Kaali. Ranijth, in an interview with The New Indian Express said, "The movie is not based on an individual. Karthi plays Kaali, an IT graduate. When you see him onscreen, he will not be seen as an actor. He has ‘lived’ in the film along with other characters.", further saying that no make-up was used for any of the cast members.

Karthi said that he chose the script as he liked the way his character is portrayed in a realistic manner without making any commercial compromises. Catherine confirmed that she would play a deglamourised role in which her character was named Kalaiarasi, a bold and assertive woman. Aadhi, Vinod and Nandakumar who were theatre artists were added to play supporting roles.

Rama, who was known for her role in director Bharathiraja's En Uyir Thozhan (1990) was roped in to play Karthi's mother and Jaya Rao was selected to play Karthi's father. Kalaiarasan was selected to play a pivotal role in the film. Ritwika of Paradesi (2013) fame, was paired opposite Kalaiarasan.
