The Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has watched the special screening of Periyar at Devi Sridevi Preview theatres in Chennai on Tuesday. The movie which features Sathyaraj in the role of rationalist leader Periyar is directed by Gnanarajasekaran with musical score by Vidyasagar and cinematography by Thangar Bachchan. The State government has given away a sum of Rs 95 lakh as financial aid for producing the movie. Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who was closely associated with Periyar, appreciated the cast and crew for giving their best in the movie. He heaped laurels on Sathyaraj and director Gnanarajasekaran for their splendid work. The movie also features Kushboo as Maniyammai, Jyothirmayee as Nagammai and director S. S. Stanley as Anna among others in the cast.
Meanwhile our Sources said that the Chief Minister earlier had some differences with the original screenplay of Director Gnanarajasekaran. In the real history, Periyar strongly criticized Karunanithi on various occasions. He even refused to meet Karunanithi at his first swearing in ceremony as the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu after the demise of Annadurai. Periyar criticized the DMK leaders and cadets as 'the drops of tears' and 'clowns of the state' in his party mouthpiece, 'Kudiyarasu' and 'Viduthalai.' He never compromised with the DMK leaders till his last breath. Baba Saheb Dr. Ambethkar and Great leader K.Kamaraj are the two leaders who won Periyar's complements.
Director Gnanarajasekaran put some scenes in the movie portraying these facts. But Karunanithi disliked those scenes and wanted to view the hardcopy of the entire screenplay. There was no way to escape for the director. After making the required corrections only, the team was allowed to shoot the movie. Now the film is ready for screening with the approval of Karunanithi. But it looks like a documentary movie which hails the good things of a leader.
'The Chief Minister granted Rs.95 lacs to produce the film. To show his thanks to the CM, the director has hidden so many historical facts just to pander to the former's selfishness.'-This is the comment from a senior leader who watched the film along with the CM.
