Chandramuki has overtaken Pokkiri -This is the latest news recently spread by ardent supporters of Vijay. When we found out the truth behind the matter, we discovered some shocking facts. Rajini, the Super Star of Tamil Cinema has been ruling the Box Office for the past couple of decades. A Rajini starring film is always the forerunning film in all the seasons. The collection record of a Rajini film has only been beaten by another Rajini film. After Karakattakkaran, the most profitable low budget film in Tamil, no other film has done as well as a Rajini film. In 1999, the media reported that Vaanathapola had broken the collection record of Padayappa. But Director Vikraman, who directed that film, had said that the news was bogus and it is very difficult to achieve the collection of Padayappa.
Chandramuki, which had an all time high collection compared to any other Rajini film, is now running its 666th day successfully at Shanthi (Noon Show) had set a new record in Tamil Cinema. Pokkiri was released with deficit budget and till the last minute of Janaury 14, there was doubt among the distributors about the release of the film. Due to the announcement by the Government of Tamil Nadu, it was made compulsory to reduce the rates of ticket in all over Tamil Nadu. The Government officials also saw that the theatres followed this rule by checking up on it. Vijay started this film when the ticket rates were at their peak. Some theatres collected Rs.250 per head in the first week of the release of a film. When the distributors realized that there was no way to collect their investment with profit in a short time, they demanded that the the price of the film be reduced. But the producers were not game for it.
Vijay met the Chief Minister along with his father S.A.Chandrasekaran and made a request to allow theaters to hike ticket rates at least for the first week of the release. But the CM had not accepted the request. In the first few days of the release, the inflow of the audience was only average . After supportive reviews and after the word was out on the street, the film got "picked" and now has become the number one among the Pongal releases.
These are all the facts behind the Box Office report of Pokkiri. But in the press meet, P.T.Selvakumar , the Vijay's PR had announced that Pokkiri had overtaken Chandramuki's collection with in 30 days! Vijay was watching this silently with his typical smile. With a low-ticket fare and moderate turnout in the beginning, how could it be possible for a deficit film to be able to make such a collection record? The distributors are still in angry on Vijay due to the loss in Aadhi. They made a compromise that the next film of Vijay may compensate the loss. Few of Pokkiri distributors came to the Tamil producers council on Saturday and discussed with Rama Naarayanan, the President of the Council, and urged him to take necessary efforts and pressure to Vijay side to settle their loss in Aadhi. To hide this issue and the related facts, the PRO had given the wrong information to the press, sources said. There is one proverb in Tamil: Illatha oorukku Ilupai poo sarkarai. It means, some thing is better than nothing . This is what actually happened in Pokkiri's case.
