Controversies That Shocked Tamil Film Industry In 2013

A year without controversy in film industry is like a movie without masala ingredients. While some are intentionally created to get free publicity, some issues unexpectedly brew up and shock audience. We present you some of the controversial episodes (Only Major Stories) in 2013 in Tamil films.

Vishwaroopam
One movie that created noise for wrong and also right reasons is none other Vishwaroopam. Kamal Hassan's dream venture ran into trouble when the actor announced his plans of releasing the film directly on DTH.

The powerful Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners' Association opposed the idea and threatened to boycott the movie if Kamal Hassan goes with his plan. Looking at the financial aspect, the Universal Star was forced to drop his plans. But this was not the end of woes for the movie as just before a few days of its release, the Tamil Nadu state government shockingly banned the film.

Acting upon a complaint filed by a minority group, the government banned Vishwaroopam in the state citing that the release of the film would create law and order issues. While the film was released in entire India and foreign countries after some initial hiccups, the Tamil flick did not release in its own territory for two weeks. After several rounds of talks, the ban was lifted on Vishwaroopam. However, upon release, the film went on to become a big hit.

With Vishwaroopam controversy episode fresh in the minds of audience, there was yet another biggie that faced a never-heard ban. Surprisingly, Vijay's Thalaivaa was the victim now. A few days before the release, some of the multiplexes received a bomb threat letter that forced theatres in the state to ban the movie for 10+ days. This time, the government denied its hand in banning.

The shocking part of the story is that neither the government nor any organisation demanded the ban. Audience were clueless about what was happening between the theatre owners and the makers of Thalaivaa. Later, it was said that there was pressure from a political party to remove the caption - Time To Lead - from the movie in order to have a release. Hence, the film was released after deleting the caption.

When Dhanush's Naiyaandi was expecting to have a smooth release with huge expectations, its female lead Nazriya Nazim dragged the film into trouble by alleging the director and producer of using a body double to shoot an intimate scene. She had complained that they shot the scenes without her permission. Later, the issue landed at the Chennai Commissioner's desk where she brought a communal angle to the story. But the issue was sorted out just before the release.
