Gautham Menon, who has given a new definition to romantic movies in Kollywood, is turning an year older today (February 25). The filmmaker is celebrating his 41st birthday in a low-key manner as he is busy with multiple projects. The birthday boy's next movie is with Simbu followed by Ajith Kumar's flick.
The director made a dream debut with Minnale starring Madhavan, Abbas and Reema Sen. The film became a biggest romantic hit during that time and it made him remake it in Hindi. There too, the film was well-received. After tasting success in love genre, he decided to make an action flick in the form of Kaakha Kaakha.
Those days, action movies projected violence and heroism and it was too formulaic. But Gautham Menon made a film with extreme finesse and made Kaakha Kaakha in his own style. In the later years, he made Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006) with Kamal Hassan and Pachaikili Muthucharam (2007) starring Sarath Kumar, etc.
But Vaaranam Aayiram (2008) and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010) added feathers to his cap. The two intriguing stories made him one of the most sought after filmmakers in South.
His Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa was even declared classic by critics. This made him to remake it in Hindi. Continue reading the story on the slideshow...
What followed next was not expected by his fans. His next movie Nadunisi Naaygal, despite getting thumbs up from critics, did not perform well at the Box Office.
Ekk Deewana Tha
Followed by Ekk Deewana Tha, the Hindi remake of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. The Bollywood film disappeared from theatres without a trace. Thus ending his unstoppable dream run.
However, Gautham Menon recovered with Neethaane En Ponvasantham. But in the last few years, he has been dragged into minor controversies. First it was his outburst on Ajith Kumar for ignoring his project. Later, his financial issues with Eldred Kumar and others.
To add salt to the injury, his back to back movies were dropped. While Vijay's Yohan was called off after doing photoshoot, Dhruva Natchathiram with Surya was shelved after muhurat.
Well, as the quote says 'everything happens for good', Gautham Menon sorted out differences with Ajith Kumar in the mean time and took a nod for a project. On the other end, he signed Simbu for his next movie after Surya's movie was dropped.
Now, Gautham Menon has two big movies in his kitty. While Simbu's Sattendru Maaruthu Vaanilai is in the shooting stage, Ajith Kumar's film is getting ready to hit the floors. All his fans hope that these films would make him return to prime form.
