Bollywood actor Salman Khan has returned with bang through his last-week release Jai Ho. The Hindi movie has opened up to positive reviews in large. The actor seems to have delivered a hit again. But the commercial success of the film is not up to the mark. Though the Hindi flick has made good business across the globe, it has not met the expected level at the Box Office. And it is the same case in Tamil Nadu Box Office.
Traders had predicted that Jai Ho would make earth-shattering collections worldwide. Leading Bollywood critic Taran Adarsh had said that Salman Khan's star power would work big time again in pulling audience to theatres. Many had claimed that the Hindi movie would cross the elite Rs 100-crore-mark in a blink of an eye and easily reach Rs 200-crore mark if the content was good.
But what we have witnessed here is something shocking. In spite of getting thumbs up from various quarters, Jai Ho has not lived up to the expectations. Jai Ho Distributed By Abirami
Abirami Mall acquired distribution rights of Tamil Nadu region of Jai Ho for a decent price. The film had around 75 shows in Chennai alone on the release day.
The occupancy for Jai Ho is expected to be somewhere around 60-65 percent in Chennai on the first day. Overall, Tamil Nadu occupancy is said to be around 45-50%. Reports say that the distributor had expected the Chennai occupancy to reach 90% on the release day.
In the second and third day, there was no improvement in the occupancy. The collections were decent on the first two days, but saw a slight dip on Saturday.
Ek Tha Tiger
A trader based in Chennai says, "Salman Khan's last movie Ek Tha Tiger had got a fantastic opening. It was released in about 45 screen here and managed to pull the audience. In the first weekend, the gross collections had reached Rs 1 crore mark. But the latest film is not pulling audience to that level,"
The trader adds, "At this pace, the distributor could only make decent profit through this movie. Nonetheless, we can't underestimate the movie because it has got good word-of-mouth."
Coming back to the collections of Jai Ho, the movie has raked in Rs 92+ crores by the end of first week. The film is expected to make overall business of Rs 150 crores at the domestic Box Office.
Jai Ho Inspired From Pay It Forward
However, Jai Ho is loosely inspired from Pay It Forward. The basic plot of the film revolved around a good-will movement and the hero starts it to make the world a better place.
Jai Ho is the remake of Telugu movie Stalin and it was directed by our own AR Murugadoss. Incidentally, the Telugu movie's collection too did not live up to the expectations even though it got positive reviews from critics.
