Nandha was the first movie that gave Surya a completely different image. The movie was a subtle but brilliant psychological thriller. In Surya's words, "When Nandha happened, everything changed. I became a serious actor, and director Bala instilled in me the discipline to work without committing errors."
Kaakha Kaakha (2003)
Kaakha Kaakha was an engrossing crime-thriller directed by Gautham Menon. In the role of a cop, Surya impressed audience in his action avatars. His pairing up with Jyothika, now his real-life wife, worked big time and became one of the biggest hits of 2003.
Many remember the performance of Vikram, an autistic graveyard caretaker, in Pithamagan but we cannot underestimate the impact of Surya's role in the movie. The film received unanimous critical acclaim and became a big hit. Bala, once again, turned lucky for both the actors.
Ghajini earned him a good name in entire South films. The movie, cutting across the language barriers, impressed Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam audiences. The success of AR Murugadoss directorial movie paved way for Aamir Khan to remake it in Hindi.
Vaaranam Aayiram (2008)
After working in action-thriller Kaakha Kaaka, Gautham Menon joined hands with Surya for Vaaranam Aayiram. The romantic-drama showed Surya in three different avatars. His performance became one of the highlights in the success of the film.
Ayan was an action-thriller directed by KV Anand. His role of a smuggler came as a welcome change for his fans. Commercially, it made good money.
Surya's Aadhavan was a mix of sentiment, action and romance. The KS Ravikumar directorial movie turned out to be a pure commercial entertainer.
AR Murugadoss directorial 7aum Arivu got mixed reviews. It made decent profit considering its heavy budget. But Surya's fans liked the movie. The actor put in a lot of hard work to his role and he managed to win the hearts.
Surya in the title role in Singam took the mass audience by storm. The fast screenplay and Surya's energetic performance played major roles in making the movie a big success.
After delivering Singam, Surya and director Hari joined hands for its sequel. This time, they made it a lavish outing and made on broader issue of drugs cartel.
