'I' Director Shankar's Top 10 Movies

The recently released Vikram's I has been doing good business all over despite attracting mixed reviews from critics. After all, it is directed by one of India's most successful director of recent times. Shankar Shanmugham, famously known as Shankar, started to make films in the year 1993 and has directed only eleven Tamil films so far with one being the remake of Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots.

Regarded as one of the safest directors in Kollywood, he is also known for his brilliant picturization and his knack of dishing out visually appealing cinemas. He can also be labelled as one of those filmmakers who knows to attract large number of people to watch his films. Thanks to his reputation and also his well developed skills of marketing his product by creating a huge hype around his movies. He's not called one of the safest directors for no reason.

As a director who consumes a lot of time to complete a film, he also makes sure to deliver films of high quality. Mixing all the right ingredients required to manufacture a commercial film with a strong storyline, the I director has managed to deliver blockbuster movies so far. With each of his movies setting records at the box office, Shankar has grown into one of India's most prominent director of the current generation.

Born in the year 1963 in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, Shankar completed a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Central Polytechnic, Chennai before he began his career as an assistant director under filmmakers like SA Chandrasekhar and Pavithran. For a man without any filmi background, Shankar has done extremely well to establish himself as a celebrated director by stitching together 12 highly successful films including a Hindi movie.

Apart from becoming a major box office success, the film also won three National Film Awards and was India's official entry into the Oscars for the Best Foreign Language Film in the year 1996. It was also the most expensive Tamil film at the time of its release with an approximate budget of 15 crore rupees.

India's first science fiction techno thriller, Enthiran is undoubtedly one of Shankar's best till date. The film which was released in 2010 was India's costliest movie ever produced. It also won many accolades for its special effects and was critically acclaimed. Featuring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai in the lead, Enthiran went on to break and create many records.

Anniyan

Anniyan

This 2005 psychological thriller had a perfect blend of all the ingredients needed for a commercial film with a hard hitting social message. Vikram's outstanding performance, grand visuals and time slice technique used in stunt sequences were all major attractions. The protagonist's urge to perform our day to day duties correctly reflected the fact that our Nation as a long way to go before even thinking of achieving a 'developed country' status.

Jeans

Jeans was a romantic comedy film that was released in the year 1998. Starring Prashanth and Aishwarya Rai in lead roles, Jeans was India's official entry into the Oscars for the Best Foreign Language Film. Shankar's efforts to showcase all seven wonders of the world in a single song attracted him praises from fans. Being India's most expensive film at that time, the movie went on to become a huge box office hit.

Sivaji

Being a Rajinikanth film, Sivaji fulfilled its viewers' expectations to the fullest for it showcased the Superstar as a software systems architect, a modern day robinhood, a white guy and as a hero with his head completely shaved. Apart from the movie gaining international exposure, it was also hailed for its special effects and grand picturization.

This 2003 coming-of-age film had Siddarth, Genelia, Bharath, Nakul and Thaman making their debut. Though the film opened up to mixed reviews and did not become a major box office hit, the movie had a bold script that was considered taboo for Indian audience back then. Mark Kobe carried out the computer graphic effects while a new 'time-freeze' technique with the help of Australian cinematographer Mark Ruff's rig was used to shoot a song sequence.

Mudhalvan

Mudhalvan was a political thriller film that was released in 1999. The film was later remade in Hindi as Nayak starring Anil Kapoor. Apart from receiving major critical appreciation, Mudhalvan also satisfied average movie goers' expectations and went on to become a successful film monetarily.

Starring Prabhu Deva and Nagma in the lead, Kadhalan was a action-romance film that was released in 1994. Featuring a new age song 'pettai rap', a rap-like style song interspersing Tamil with English words and a unique choreography for a song sequence that included brilliant special effects, Kadhalan was a hugely popular movie at that time.

Gentleman

Gentleman released in 1993 and was Shankar's first movie as a director. This is where it all began and it was a perfect start too. It also marked the beginning of a famed collaboration between AR Rahman and Shankar. The track "Ottagathai Kattiko" soundtracked a BBC fashion show. The film won many State awards and was a runaway hit at the box office.

Unfortunately, due to a weak plot, Shankar's latest release I gets the last spot only because of its technical brilliance and extravagant visuals. The film however, may hand Vikram many awards in the following days. I was arguably the most anticipated Shankar film purely because of its pre release hype. Shankar also imported many foreign make up artists to work on Vikram's different looks in the movie.
