Tamil Heroes Who Have Gone Out Of The Box To Try Wacky Roles!
In the recently released Masss(Massu Engira Masilamani), Suriya has tried something that he has never tried before, a horror comedy flick portraying himself as a ghost.
It needs special courage for anyone to try something entirely new, especially when they are still finding success in whatever role they are taking up at the present.
Like what Suriya has done in Masss, many other Tamil heroes in the past have given up on their comfort zone to try different or a complete wacky character which might've even put their current market value or status at risk.
While some have actually tasted success doing so, many have failed at their honest attempts. Regardless of box office success, it is our responsibility to identify such efforts in order to appreciate the work done.
From Rajinikanth to Vijay Sethupathi, Kollywood heroes have been bold enough to experiment with their roles in certain movies, much to the delight of critics and movie lovers.

Prior to Netrikan, Rajinikanth had found success as an action hero through movies like Murattu Kalai, Thee, Kazhugu etc., in Netrikan he took up the role of an aged businessman who is a womanizer with pervert thoughts and actions. You do need courage to take up such a role in the midst of delivering successful movies.
Kamal Haasan in Many Movies
Honestly, it is impossible to pick one movie of Kamal Haasan in this particular category for he is known for his experiments and off beat characters. He is one star who started his career with unique roles, stuck on to such roles throughout his career and will keep doing the same(not quite the same) in the future as well.
Ajith in Vaali And Mankatha
Ajith is another actor who has experimented with his roles quite often. Be it his sadistic villainous character in Vaali, the physically challenged role in Villain, the dancer with effeminate qualities in Varalaaru or the money minded baddie in Mankatha, all these roles were portrayed by Ajith when he had already found his success mantra.
Vikram in Sethu, Kasi, Pithamagan and Deiva Thirumagal
Arguably, Vikram has been the bravest actor of them all simply because of the fact that he had struggled a lot until he was seen as an action hero in Dhill. What does he do after the success of Dhill? He chooses to act in Kasi, enough said.
Sarathkumar in Kanchana
After making a name for himself as the hunk of Kollywood, Sarathkumar was bold enough to portray the role of a transgender in Kanchana. Not sure if any one else, after attaining Sarathkumar's stature, would've tried a similar role.
Arya in Naan Kadavul
Arya did not have any prominent dialogues, duet songs in foreign locations or any other commercial elements to show off in Naan Kadavul. In fact, he did not even have much of a screen space in the movie but yet he managed to impress one and all with his completely out of the box script and character selection.
Dhanush in Pudhupettai, Aadukalam and 3
Dhanush too have made some brilliant script selection that allowed him to explore himself as an actor. Thanks to his experiments, he is on the verge of becoming a National hero.
Vijay Sethupathi in Soodhu Kavvum
It needs some courage to portray yourself as an aged man while still trying to find your feet in the Tamil film industry. Ironically, this very courageous nature of his earned him a permanent place in Kollywood.
Jiiva in Kattradhu Thamizh
Jiiva too has experimented with his roles to an extent and the movie Kattradhu Thamizh stands out. His ability to pull off such an off-beat role at such a young age is praise worthy.
Surya in Nandha, Perazhagan and Masss
And last but certainly not the least in this list is Suriya. As mentioned earlier, his choice to go with a horror comedy after having established himself as one of top Kollywood heroes is a welcome sign.
