Why Should Movies Have To Go Through Censors: Mani Ratnam

Ace director Mani Ratnam who is eagerly waiting to see his fans' reaction once OK Kanmani(O Kadhal Kanmani) hits the screen this Friday has spoken about his film and much more in a recent interview.

Talking about the storyline of the Dulquer-Nithya starrer, the maverick filmmaker surprisingly said that OK Kanmani is a simple film with a simple concept.

"It is about the relationship between a boy and a girl and what they want out of their life", he said. Sure enough, this new Mani Ratnam film was touted to be the new age Alaipayuthey.

Ask him about his not so healthy relationship with the Censor Board and the Nayagan director is quick to react by saying the story goes back to the Mouna Ragam days.

There is this famous story which talks about how the Censor Board had decided to award Mouna Ragam an A certificate just because the heroine of the film asks for divorce and Mani, as he is fondly called went down the memory lane pretty quickly.

"When other art forms do not have to go through censors, why should movies have to, which subsequently curbs the creative freedom of a director"? He asks.

Yearning for a change in the system, he also said, sometimes it makes him wonder how Hindi films with much bolder themes makes it through hassle-free.

Will India's one of the most respected director's questions be answered? Let's wait and watch. Stay tuned for further updates on this and all the exciting movies scheduled to be released later this week.
