Fondly called 'Thalaiva', the star enjoys a strong fan following thanks to his charismatic personality, gripping screen presence and humble nature. A remake of the Malayalam classic Manichitrathazhu, Chandramukhi was Rajinikanth's comeback film and helped him bounce back from the debacle of Baba. In the psychological-thriller, he essayed the role played by Mohanlal in the original version and took the character to new heights. His on-screen antics and the iconic ‘laka laka laka' dialogue/chant made Chandramukhi a hit with all and sundry.

Padayappa

Released in 1999, Padayappa is perhaps best remembered for Rajini's fiery dialogues and his intense chemistry with Ramya Krishnan. Directed by KS Ravikumar, it emerged as a huge hit upon its release and soon became an evergreen classic. Padayappa also featured Sivaji Ganesan and Nassar in the key roles.

Directed by Suresh Krisshna, Baashha is regarded as one of the finest Tamil films of all time and went a long way in cementing Rajini's mass-hero image. In it, the actor played the role of an auto-rickshaw driver who has a secret identity and a dark past. As expected, it did full justice to his career and left the fans asking for more.
