Ponniyin Selvan 2 is the big thing in India right now. The Mani Ratnam's directorial hit the screens on April 28 to a rousing response. The movie and its cast are winning praise for their performances.

Among the many renowned and ensemble cast the movie has, Aishwarya Lekshmi, fairly a newbie, sprung a surprise as Poonguzhali. Poonguzhali is a boat woman who helps Arunmozhi Varman from the attack and brings him back to safety from Srilanka.

Speaking about her opportunity to work with Mani Ratnam, Aishwarya Lekshmi said, "I never expected my character to be appreciated, accepted or loved like this. I expected the movie to do well, I expected everybody's character (To do well) because all of them are superstars, I expected to bask in their glory. I never expected to be loved like this. I feel the love everywhere I go," Aishwarya Lekshmi was quoted saying to the Indian Express.

In addition, commenting on the screen time, she said, "My character Poonguzhali didn't have a lot of screen time but she was a well formed person in her own right. She is fearless, fierce, she does all the physical work that is necessary," added Aishwarya Lekshmi.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 Story

Based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's literary work by the same name, Ponniyin Selvan charts the journey of the Chola King Arunmozhi Varman, who later on was remembered as the Raja Raja Chola. The first part dealt with the introduction of the key characters and how Arunmozhi Varman is saved by a mysterious woman named 'Vooma Rani.'

The movie is adapted from the novel of the same name, written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The novel was converted into a screenplay by director Mani Ratnam along with B Jeyamohan and Elango Kumaravel. The dialogues are penned by B Jeyamohan in Tamil, and Tanikella Bharani in Telugu.
