Ponniyin Selvan 2 Box Office: Records The Mani Ratnam Directorial Could Break On Day-1

The day has almost come, and fans of Tamil cinema are awaiting to witness the magic of Ponniyin Selvan 2 on April 28. The sequel of the Mani Ratnam directorial is one of the highly anticipated movies, as the first part received a huge positive response from fans and critics alike. If all goes well, the film has the potential to break several records in the history of Tamil cinema.

When the first part was released, it turned out to be a monster at the box office by fetching Rs. 60 crore on day 1. The day 1 collection of the first part still remains unbeaten even though several mega budget ventures were released after that.

Kamal Haasan's Vikram, which was released last year, earned a massive number of Rs. 58 crore on its day 1, which was slightly more than the blockbuster, KGF 2. The Yash starer made a little above Rs. 53 crore. As far as Tamil cinema is concerned, Vijay's Beast made Rs. 35 crore, while Ajith Kumar's Valimai made Rs. 36 crore on its day 1. This year Varisu and Thunivu clashed at the box office as they were released on the same day. While Varidu made Rs. 41 crore on its opening day, Thunivu fetched Rs. 39 crore.

These are the records that Ponniyin Selvan 2 has the potential of breaking on day 1. However, the ticket booking window has been dull and several theatres in Chennai still have not booked full. So, it might get a slow start. However, if the word-of-mouth reviews turn out to be positive after the first show, things can turn around for Ponniyin Selvan 2.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, and Chiyaan Vikram are the lead actors of the historical fiction. Lyca Pictures along with Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies have jointly bankrolled the project. The first part made more than Rs. 500 crore at the box office.
