Sangavi Recalls How She Managed Not To Get Beaten Up By SA Chandrasekar On Sets, “I was The Only Heroine…”

Yesteryear actress Sangavi was one of the top actresses back in the day. Having started her career by sharing the screen space with Ajith Kuar, she has given several memorable roles and several of her movies are timeless classics. In an interview, she recently recalled how she managed to not get beaten up by director SA Chandrasekar.

She said, "Chandrasekar sir was very sceptical about featuring me in Rasigan because my role in Amaravathi was very soft. He was doubtful if I could do a glamorous role since my role in Amarathi was exactly the opposite. People used to tell me on the sets that Chandrasekar would beat actresses if he got frustrated. They also told me that I was the only actress to not get hit by him. I was very scared when I was shooting for Rasigan. I did not want to get beaten up. I did my part properly only out of fear. I learned discipline only from him as every one of the cast and crew would be on the sets at the right time."

About her other roles, she said, "I accepted all roles that came across my way after Rasigan. Irrespective of my roll, I was given at least one glamorous scene either in swimming pool or sequence in rain. Later, I started saying no to glamorous role if it was not required for the story. I started acting when I was just 14-years-old. I was in class 9 when I did my first movie, Amaravathi."

She added that she was scared to say no initially. "I did not see what roll I had to play in movies initially, because I wanted the world to know about me. I started getting costumes that were revealing. I did not have the courage to say no to wearing such costumes. I did not even know that we could say no to wearing such costumes."
