Nadigar Sangam To Implement Strict Measures Against Sexual Harassment In Tamil Cinema

Nadigar Sangam To Enforce Measures Against Sexual Harassment: In a significant move to address sexual harassment within the Tamil film industry, Nadigar Sangam, the union representing film, television, and stage actors, has decided to take firm action against such complaints. The decision was made during a crucial meeting held in Chennai on Wednesday, aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of women in the industry. This initiative follows the release of the Hema Committee report, which investigated sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry, sparking calls for similar measures in Tamil cinema.
During the meeting, which began at 11 a.m., key leaders of Nadigar Sangam, including President Nassar, General Secretary Vishal, and Treasurer Karthi, along with prominent actresses Suhasini, Khushbu, and Rohini, discussed the urgent need for proactive measures. The union has decided to establish an internal complaints redressal cell specifically dedicated to investigating sexual harassment complaints.
Nadigar Sangam's New Measures Include Five-Year Ban If Proven Guilty
One of the most significant outcomes of the meeting is the decision to impose a strict five-year ban on any individual found guilty of sexual harassment within the industry. In addition to implementing punitive measures, Nadigar Sangam is committed to providing legal assistance to victims of harassment. The union plans to establish a dedicated email and phone line for reporting complaints directly to the internal complaints redressal cell, which will then forward these complaints to the cyber police for further investigation. Nadigar Sangam has also issued a stern warning, advising victims not to disclose their complaints to the media before reporting them to the union. This decision by the union has drawn some criticism.
This decisive action by Nadigar Sangam comes at a time when organizations within the Malayalam film industry have been criticized for their slow response to the Hema Committee's findings. Actor Vishal had earlier called for an investigation into sexual harassment in Tamil cinema, similar to the one conducted by the Hema Committee in Kerala. His call for action was supported by several other actors and industry leaders.
The Hema Committee report has had a ripple effect across the South Indian film industries, prompting discussions on the need for better protection and support for women in cinema. In Tamil Nadu, figures such as BJP leader and actress Radhika Sarathkumar have been at the forefront of demands for a committee similar to the Hema Committee. Additionally, political parties like the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have also voiced their support for stronger measures against sexual harassment in the industry.
