Freedom X Review: What Audiences Are Saying About Sasikumar And Lijomol Jose’s Film Based On True Events

Freedom X Review What Audiences Are Saying

Freedom X Review: Freedom, the latest Tamil action drama from director Sathyasiva, recently had its premiere screening. Headlined by M. Sasikumar and Lijomol Jose, the film has started to draw attention on social media following the release of its trailer and premiere, with early viewers sharing their initial impressions.

The film, produced by Pandiyan Parasuraman under the Vijaya Ganapathy's Pictures banner, was in the news due to its subject matter. Set against the backdrop of the early 1990s, Freedom is based on real-life events involving Sri Lankan refugees who were incarcerated at Vellore Fort under suspicion of involvement in a major political assassination. Despite being cleared of the charges, many remained imprisoned until a group of 43 staged an escape in 1995; a few were recaptured, while others reportedly fled to other countries seeking refuge.

Freedom Opens to Online Buzz

Following the premiere, users on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) have reacted to the film. More detailed responses and critiques are expected in the coming days as it reaches a wider audience.

The narrative, according to the makers, aims to spotlight a lesser-known chapter from Tamil Nadu's socio-political history. Sasikumar and Lijomol portray refugees navigating the challenges of incarceration and displacement. The film also features Sudev Nair in a pivotal negative role, along with performances by Malavika Avinash, Bose Venkat, Mu Ramasamy, Saravanan, Ramesh Khanna, and Boys Manikandan.

Directed and written by Sathyasiva, known for Kazhugu and Savaale Samaali, Freedom reunites him with Sasikumar after their earlier collaboration in Naan Mirugamaai Maara (2022). The film's technical crew includes cinematographer N.S. Uthayakumar and editor Srikanth N.B., with music composed by Ghibran.

Take a Poll

Filming wrapped in June 2025, according to the production team. Since then, anticipation around the release has grown, especially given the film's politically relevant storyline. Marketing and promotions were handled by Vijayaraghavan R. of The Brand Max.

Correction (Thursday July 10):
A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that the film had been released in theatres, though it was initially scheduled for a July 10 release. It has since come to our attention that the release has been delayed. Audience reactions on X (formerly Twitter) will be added to this article as they appear following the film's actual release.
