Housemates First Review: Darshan, Aarsha And Kaali Venkat Starrer Features ‘Unexplored Fantasy Angle’

Housemates First Review: Housemates, the upcoming Tamil film that brings together elements of comedy, fantasy, and horror, is set to release in theaters on August 1, 2025. Directed by debutant Rajavel and backed by producers Sivakarthikeyan and S. Vijayaprakash under the SK Productions banner, the film features Darshan, Aarsha Chandini Baiju, Kaali Venkat, Vinodhini Vaidyanathan, Dheena, Kenrick Ashley, and Abdool Lee in prominent roles.
Following the premiere of the movie, film journalist Rajasekar shared his impressions on social media. He noted that although the trailer was edited to resemble a horror-comedy, the film itself unfolds more as a fantasy drama that aims to rewrite the fate of a family. According to him, the film takes about fifteen minutes to settle into its rhythm, after which it begins to work effectively.
Rajasekar appreciated Kaali Venkat's performance, mentioning that the actor has once again delivered solid work. He also praised Vinodhini Vaidyanathan, particularly highlighting how she and Kaali Venkat shine in both emotional and comical moments. Darshan and Aarsha Chandini Baiju were acknowledged for their 'neat' performances. Commending the director's approach, Rajasekar added that newcomer Rajavel "shines with his core idea, engaging screenplay, and an unexplored fantasy angle." He rated the film 3.5 out of 5, calling it "definitely worth your time," with a total runtime of 129 minutes.
Fantasy Meets Mystery as Two Families Face Unseen Forces
Housemates follows the story of newlyweds Karthik and Anu, who move into an old apartment in hopes of starting their life together. Soon, they begin to witness eerie and unexplained events inside their home. In parallel, another family experiences similar occurrences in a different house. The plot explores how both families come together to confront these incidents and attempt to restore normalcy in their lives.
On the technical front, the film features music by Rajesh Murugesan, cinematography by M.S. Sathish, and editing by A. Nishar Sharef. The art direction is managed by N.K. Rahul, with action sequences choreographed by Dinesh Kasi and sound design handled by Harish and KDK Sankar.
With its unique genre-blending approach and early positive reactions, Housemates is generating interest as it nears its theatrical debut. Whether its fantasy-driven narrative finds a wider audience will unfold once it hits screens on August 1.
