Jailer 2 Update Likely Soon? Here’s What We Know About The Buzz Around Rajinikanth-Nelson Dilipkumar Film

Jailer 2 Update Expected: Jailer 2, the sequel to the 2023 Tamil blockbuster Jailer, is currently in production with Rajinikanth returning in the lead role. The film is directed and written by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner. With Nelson's birthday falling on June 21, speculation is mounting that an official update about the film could be released on that day, potentially in the form of a teaser or a release date announcement.
The project was formally announced by Sun Pictures in January 2025, though Nelson had earlier expressed an interest in continuing the story of Jailer even before its original release. Filming began in March 2025 in Chennai, with initial schedules focused on scenes featuring Rajinikanth. A specially constructed village set was used during the shoot, and the early phase reportedly lasted 15 to 20 days.
Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 Moves Through Key Production Milestones
In a moment that drew attention across fan circles, directors Karthik Subbaraj (Petta) and Lokesh Kanagaraj (Coolie) visited the Chennai sets on March 20. A group photograph featuring them with Rajinikanth and Nelson quickly circulated online.
The second shooting schedule began in April in Attappadi, Kerala, where key cast members including Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa Menon, and S. J. Suryah joined the production. In mid-May, the unit moved to Cheruvannur in Calicut for another schedule lasting approximately 30 days. Rajinikanth participated in this leg for nearly a week before returning to Chennai. The overall shoot is projected to be completed by December 2025.
Anirudh Ravichander returns as the music composer, continuing his long-standing collaborations with both Rajinikanth and Nelson. The track "Hukum Reloaded" was used in the announcement teaser, which premiered on January 14 this year during Pongal, and was also screened in theaters across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and parts of North India.
In addition to the returning cast-Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, and Mirnaa Menon-the sequel introduces S. J. Suryah in a significant role. Guest appearances by Shiva Rajkumar and Nandamuri Balakrishna have also been confirmed. Discussions are reportedly ongoing with actor Mohanlal for a potential reprise of his character Mathew from the first installment.
As fans await June 21 for a possible update, all eyes remain on the progress of this high-profile sequel.
