Kaantha Box Office Collection Day 2: Dulquer Salmaan's Period Drama Film Crosses ₹9 Crore In India

Kaantha Box Office Collection: The Tamil period mystery drama Kaantha, released on 14 November, has completed two days in theaters with steady box office figures. Directed and co-written by Selvamani Selvaraj, the film features Dulquer Salmaan, Samuthirakani, Bhagyashri Borse, and Rana Daggubati in principal roles. Ahead of its release, the project drew attention due to speculation that it was inspired by the life of early Tamil cinema star M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. The team later issued a clarification stating that the narrative is entirely fictional.
According to early estimates by box office tracking site Sacnilk, Kaantha has collected approximately ₹9.2 crore net across India within its first two days. The film opened to a reported ₹4.35 crore on Friday, with the Tamil version contributing ₹2.65 crore and the Telugu version around ₹1.7 crore. Saturday saw a marginal rise, with day two collections estimated at ₹4.85 crore (Tamil: ₹3.25 crore; Telugu: ₹1.6 crore). The increase amounts to an 11.49 percent jump from its opening day, indicating a reasonably stable beginning for a film positioned within a niche period-drama and mystery space.
Kaantha Story Overview and Crew
Set in 1950s Madras, the plot follows the tense working relationship between an experienced filmmaker, Ayya, and the actor he once helped elevate, T. K. Mahadevan. Conflicts rise when Mahadevan interferes with the creative choices in Ayya's film. This introduces new tensions on the film set. Matters take a darker turn when a murder interrupts the shoot, drawing Inspector Devaraj into an extensive investigation. As the inquiry progresses, the histories and motivations of Ayya and Mahadevan become key to understanding the events unfolding around the production.
The film brings together a large technical team, including cinematographer Dani Sanchez Lopez, editor Llewellyn Anthony Gonsalvez, art director Ramalingam, and composer Jhanu Chanthar. It is produced by Rana Daggubati, Dulquer Salmaan, Prashanth Potluri, and Jom Varghese under Spirit Media and Wayfarer Films.
With Sunday (day three) expected to offer a clearer picture of its opening weekend trajectory, Kaantha now moves into its first crucial phase at the box office as word of mouth and weekend footfall begin to take shape.
