Kamal Haasan Fights Ban Threats, Moves Court For Thug Life Release In Karnataka Amid Language Row
Kamal Haasan's remarks about Kannada's origins lead to significant backlash and legal action for his film Thug Life's screening in Karnataka. As protests escalate, he remains firm in his stance against apologising.

Kamal Haasan Controversy: Kamal Haasan's remarks claiming "Kannada is born out of Tamil" continue to stir controversy and have now led him to seek legal intervention to ensure his forthcoming movie, Thug Life, screens in Karnataka. The actor sought the assistance of the Karnataka High Court following threats from pro-Kannada groups who demanded an apology for his comments, threatening to block the film's release in the state. Haasan's plea to the court was a move to guarantee that the movie's screening goes uninterrupted.
The situation has escalated as pro-Kannada organizations and political parties have voiced strong opposition, with some suggesting that the film's release would be compromised without Haasan's apology. "This is not about the industry, this is about the state. Even political parties are opposing, pro-Kannada organisations are making it clear that he has to respond. The movie's release is difficult without his apology. Our exhibitors or distributors are not ready to screen it. How can the movie release here?" said M Narasimhalu, president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, highlighting the challenges posed by the controversy.
Despite the mounting pressure, Haasan remains firm in his stance, refusing to apologize for his statement. He asserts that his remark was made out of love and emphasizes his belief in democracy, law, and justice. "I will not apologise for something I said out of love. It is a democracy. I believe in law and justice. My love for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala is true. Nobody will suspect it except for those who have an agenda," Haasan stated, defending his position amidst the ongoing backlash.
The controversy has not only involved legal actions and statements from industry leaders but has also seen public demonstrations against Haasan. In various cities within Karnataka, including Bengaluru, protests have erupted, and posters of Thug Life have been torn down as a form of protest. These actions signify the depth of the discontent with Haasan's comments.
Adding to the discourse, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has commented on the issue, suggesting that Haasan lacks awareness of the Kannada language's rich history. This statement from the state's chief minister adds a political dimension to the controversy, underscoring the significant cultural sensitivities at play.
Despite the uproar and calls for an apology from Haasan, Thug Life is slated for a nationwide release on June 5. The film's journey to the big screen in Karnataka, however, remains uncertain as the actor and pro-Kannada groups continue to stand firm on their respective positions. This ongoing saga highlights the delicate balance between cultural pride and artistic expression, with the outcome of Haasan's legal appeal eagerly anticipated.
