Kamal Haasan Likely To Enter Rajya Sabha; TN Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin Meets Him

Kamal Haasan Likely To Enter Rajya Sabha

Kamal Haasan Likely To Enter Rajya Sabha: In a significant political development, actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan is expected to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu. Reports indicate that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has decided to nominate the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief to the Upper House as part of its quota. With the elections for six vacant Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu scheduled for July 2025, Kamal's entry into the Parliament appears imminent.

Udhayanidhi Stalin Meets Kamal Haasan

Confirming the speculation, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin met Kamal Haasan at his residence on Tuesday. Following the meeting, Udhayanidhi took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share a message, which, when loosely translated, reads: "We met the leader of Makkal Needhi Maiam - Kamal Haasan sir at his residence today as a courtesy. My love and gratitude to Kamal sir for welcoming us warmly and exchanging views on various fields such as politics and art." The meeting has further fueled discussions about Haasan's political future.

The move to nominate Kamal Haasan to the Rajya Sabha is reportedly part of an electoral understanding between MNM and DMK during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Kamal's party, MNM, chose not to contest the elections but instead extended its full support to the DMK-led INDIA bloc in Tamil Nadu. According to a report by India Today, on March 9, 2024, Kamal Haasan visited the DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, where he signed an agreement with Chief Minister MK Stalin. As part of this pact, Kamal was to campaign for the DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in exchange for a promised Rajya Sabha seat in 2025.

The report further states that with the tenure of six Rajya Sabha MPs, including members from the DMK, AIADMK, and PMK, set to end by June 2025, the ruling party is now fulfilling its commitment by nominating Kamal Haasan. His potential entry into the Upper House could mark a significant phase in his political career, which has faced both challenges and transformations since he founded MNM in 2018.

Despite his star power, Kamal Haasan's political journey has been fraught with difficulties. His party, positioned as a centrist alternative, struggled in both the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, where MNM contested alone but failed to secure a major electoral breakthrough. Meanwhile, the DMK-led coalition solidified its influence in the state, emerging victorious in consecutive elections.

Apart from his political engagements, Kamal Haasan remains active in cinema. His upcoming film Thug Life, directed by filmmaker Mani Ratnam, is one of the most anticipated Tamil films of 2025. The gangster action drama, co-written by Kamal Haasan himself, marks his reunion with Mani Ratnam after their iconic 1987 film Nayakan. Produced by Raaj Kamal Films International, Madras Talkies, and Red Giant Movies, Thug Life is slated for a grand release on June 5, 2025.

As Haasan prepares for his likely Rajya Sabha nomination, his political and cinematic paths continue to overlap. An official announcement is expected soon, which could further establish his role in politics beyond films.
