Madras Matinee First Review: ‘A Slice-of-Life Glimpse Into Chennai's Lower Middle-Class Lives'

Madras Matinee First Review: Ahead of its theatrical release on June 6, Madras Matinee has received its first review, offering early insights into what audiences can expect from the Tamil drama. Directed by Karthikeyan Mani, the film features Kaali Venkat and Roshini Haripriyan in lead roles, with a supporting cast that includes Shelly, Vishva, Sunil Sukhada, George Maryan, and Sathyaraj.
Industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai shared his impressions after a preview screening, describing the film as "a slice-of-life emotional drama" that reflects the rhythms and challenges of Chennai's lower middle class. The story unfolds through characters who, according to Sreedhar Pillai, "feel like people you see every day." Sathyaraj takes on the role of the film's narrator, guiding viewers through the emotional terrain of the narrative.
At the heart of Madras Matinee is Kannan, an auto driver portrayed by Kaali Venkat, who juggles his dedication to family with the hardships of day-to-day survival. Shelly plays his wife, while Vishva and Roshni Haripriyan appear as the couple's children. Sreedhar Pillai observes that the film's first half moves at a slow pace; the second half gains momentum, leading to a satisfying conclusion. He rates the film a 3 out of 5.
An interesting narrative layer features an aging science fiction writer who is encouraged by his caretaker to move away from fantastical plots and write about everyday lives. This leads him to begin drafting Kannan's story, which unfolds with unexpected emotional depth.
