Film Background
Retro was initially announced in March 2024 under the working title Suriya 44, accompanied by the tagline Love, Laughter, War. The official title was confirmed in December 2024. Shot extensively in locations such as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ooty, Kerala, and Chennai, the film is produced by Stone Bench Creations in association with 2D Entertainment.
The plot follows Paarivel "Paari" Kannan, an orphan raised by a gangster, who uncovers his hidden past while becoming entangled in a violent cult. Suriya plays dual roles across timelines, while Pooja Hegde portrays Rukmini, Paari's love interest.
The ensemble cast includes Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, Prakash Raj, and Vidhu, among many others. Santhosh Narayanan composed the music, with cinematography by Shreyaas Krishna and editing by Shafique Mohamed Ali.
