The film, which hit theaters on May 1, 2025, will be available for streaming on Netflix starting May 31. It will be accessible in five languages: Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
Netflix confirmed the release with a social media post that read, "A sacred spear. A secret identity. A saga for the ages. Watch Retro, out 31 May, on Netflix in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam."
Retro: A Journey Across Time and Terrain
Retro unfolds over three decades and follows the life of Paarivel "Paari" Kannan, an orphan raised in 1960s Thoothukudi by the wife of a gangster. What begins as a tale of familial tension and romance evolves into a story involving betrayal, secret identities, and a violent underground cult. The narrative moves from Tamil Nadu to the Andaman Islands, exploring the protagonist's search for his roots and a long-lost love, all while being drawn into a local prophecy.
The film was initially announced in March 2024 under the working title Suriya 44, with the tagline "Love, Laughter, War." The official title was unveiled in December 2024. Principal photography began in June and wrapped by early October 2024, with filming locations including Chennai, Kerala, Ooty, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Directed and written by Karthik Subbaraj, Retro is jointly produced by 2D Entertainment and Stone Bench Creations. The film features an extensive supporting cast, including Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, Prakash Raj, and Vidhu. Santhosh Narayanan composed the music, while cinematography was handled by Shreyaas Krishna and editing by Shafique Mohamed Ali.
The story's scale and setting span decades and geographies, incorporating themes of identity, family, and resistance. As the plot shifts between periods and places, Paari navigates a world of shifting allegiances, political schemes, and violent confrontations-culminating in a confrontation that blurs the lines between myth and memory.
With its digital debut set, viewers who missed Retro in theaters will now have a chance to catch the film on Netflix from May 31.
