Retro Tamil Nadu Box Office Collection Day 1 Prediction: Suriya-Starrer Set To Be Actor's Career-Best Opening

Retro Tamil Nadu Box Office Collection Prediction: Karthik Subbaraj's much-anticipated Tamil romantic action film Retro, starring Suriya and Pooja Hegde, hit theaters worldwide on May 1, 2025. Backed by Stone Bench Creations and 2D Entertainment, the film has generated considerable attention in Tamil Nadu and beyond, thanks to its lead actor's popularity and the director's distinct filmmaking style.
Set against a narrative that blends romance, action, and redemption, Retro follows the story of Paarivel "Paari" Kannan, a gangster trying to break free from the shadows of his past. His efforts to begin anew with his wife, Rukmini (played by Pooja Hegde), are soon interrupted as old enemies and long-buried secrets resurface, pushing him back into a world he hoped to leave behind.
The film was officially announced in early 2024 as Suriya 44 before receiving its final title later that year. Principal photography spanned multiple scenic and urban locations, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ooty, Kerala, and Chennai. Shreyaas Krishna handled the cinematography, while the editing was done by Shafique Mohamed Ali. Santhosh Narayanan composed the film's soundtrack and score.
Retro Tamil Nadu Box Office Collection Day 1 Prediction
As per box office tracker Cinetrak, Retro has crossed ₹9 crore in gross collections in Tamil Nadu by 1 PM IST on its opening day, already surpassing the final Day 1 figure of Kanguva (₹8.92 crore). This makes it set to become Suriya's career-best opening in the state. The extent of that lead, however, will be determined by the performance of the film during the evening and night shows.
The film features an extensive supporting cast, including Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran, Nassar, and Prakash Raj. Cameos by Shriya Saran and Santhosh Narayanan appear in two musical numbers.
With strong early traction and a wide release, Retro is positioned for a solid opening weekend. However, its longer-term performance will depend on word-of-mouth and weekday retention. The coming days will offer a clearer picture of how the film fares beyond the initial curiosity.
