Retro Tamil Nadu Day 1 Box Office Gross Collection: Suriya's Career-Highest Opening With ₹14.25 Crore

Retro Tamil Nadu Box Office Collection: Karthik Subbaraj's latest directorial venture Retro, starring Suriya and Pooja Hegde, hit theatres worldwide on May 1, 2025. Backed by Stone Bench Creations and 2D Entertainment, the film has opened to strong numbers at the Tamil Nadu box office, grossing ₹14.25 crore on its first day, according to industry tracker A B George.
The day one figure marks the highest opening in Tamil Nadu for a Suriya-starrer, surpassing the actor's previous best. The film, a romantic action drama set across multiple decades and locations, has garnered attention for its stylized storytelling.
In addition to its performance in Tamil Nadu, Retro also showed notable traction in overseas markets. In the United Kingdom, the film grossed £58,000 (approximately ₹64.82 lakh), making it the second-biggest opening for Suriya in that region, trailing only behind Kanguva, which had earned £96,000 on its opening day.
Southeast Asia proved to be another stronghold. The film collected RM 1.17 million in Malaysia and SG$112,000 in Singapore, making it Suriya's career-best opening day in both countries. These numbers indicate the actor's growing popularity in overseas markets, especially among the Tamil diaspora.
About Retro
Retro is set in the 1960s and follows the life of Paari, an orphan adopted by a gangster, Thilagan. As Paari grows up, he grapples with complex relationships and moral choices, eventually taking a different path that puts him in conflict with his adoptive family. The narrative shifts to an island setting where Paari, under a new identity, takes on a corrupt elite while seeking personal redemption. The film blends elements of period drama, romance, and action.
The ensemble cast includes Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, Prakash Raj, and Karunakaran, with Pooja Hegde playing Rukmini, a veterinarian and Paari's love interest. The technical crew features Santhosh Narayanan on music, Shreyaas Krishna handling cinematography, and Shafique Mohamed Ali in charge of editing.
Released in both standard and EPIQ formats, Retro has also been acquired by Netflix for digital streaming in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. How the film sustains its momentum over the weekend will be closely watched, especially given the strong competition expected from other releases.
