Retro Worldwide Box Office Collection: Did Suriya-Karthik Subbaraj's Film Miss The ₹100 Crore Mark?

Retro Box Office Did Suriya s Film Miss 100 Crore Mark

Retro Worldwide Box Office Collection: Suriya's latest film, Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, appears to be nearing the end of its theatrical run after three weeks in cinemas. Despite a wide release and the backing of notable production houses-Stone Bench Creations and 2D Entertainment-the film has fallen short of hitting the much-anticipated ₹100 crore milestone at the global box office.

As of the end of its third weekend, Retro has reportedly collected a worldwide gross of ₹96.5 crore. According to box office tracking portal Cinetrak, the film added less than ₹50 lakh over its latest weekend, indicating a sharp decline in momentum. The slowdown has all but confirmed that the film is unlikely to cross the coveted ₹100 crore mark during its theatrical run.

Domestically, Retro has managed to collect ₹70.5 crore, while its overseas earnings stand at approximately $3.08 million (around ₹26 crore). The combined total across all markets amounts to ₹96.5 crore after 18 days in theaters.

While the theatrical box office collection stands at ₹96.5 crore after 18 days, according to Cinetrak, the makers have recently announced that the combined theatrical and non-theatrical revenue has crossed ₹235 crore worldwide.

Retro: From High Hopes to Nearing Box Office Close

Released on May 1, 2025, the film had a simultaneous release in standard and EPIQ formats. With expectations set high owing to the collaboration between Suriya and Karthik Subbaraj, Retro generated considerable pre-release interest. The film was earlier known by its working title, Suriya 44, before the official title was unveiled in December 2024.

A period romantic action film, Retro unfolds across several decades, beginning in the 1960s. It follows Paarivel "Paari" Kannan, played by Suriya, as he navigates a life marked by loss, identity, and resistance. From being raised by a gangster to uncovering a hidden past linked to a cult in the Andaman Islands, the narrative intertwines action, drama, and emotional conflict. Pooja Hegde plays the role of Rukmini alongside Suriya.

Take a Poll

In terms of production, the film features cinematography by Shreyaas Krishna and music by Santhosh Narayanan. Editing is handled by Shafique Mohamed Ali. The supporting cast features Joju George, Jayaram, Karunakaran, among others.

With dwindling theatrical revenue, the focus is now likely to shift to the film's post-theatrical life, including its digital and satellite releases. However, based on current trends, Retro seems set to close its box office run just shy of the ₹100 crore benchmark.
