Taking to Instagram, actor and model Kuldeep Gadhvi lauded Kamal Haasan's performance in the movie. He emphasised that while the movie is long, it has all the elements to keep you hooked. "The first half may seem a little slow but the when the second half comes, the film will take such a grip that you cannot imagine. Talking about the story, the story keeps you hooked from the beginning to the end. There are many twists and turns in the film. The action shots are amazing in the film. The way Mani Ratnam has directed it is solid. Kamal Haasan's work is great, the way he has acted is totally legendary, Silambarasan's negative shade is amazing," he wrote. He also emphasised that Thug Life is not similar to Indian 2.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Hollywood Reporter India, Kamal Haasan had revealed that Thug Life is based on his script Amar Hai. "I finished a script and it was called Amar Hai, which was a pun. A man who is believed to be dead is not dead. His name is Amar, and that's the problem. Mani took it as an idea and went on to enhance it," the actor added.
