Thug Life OTT Release: After a theatrical run that sparked mixed reactions and discussions across audiences, Thug Life, the Tamil gangster drama directed by Mani Ratnam and headlined by Kamal Haasan, is reportedly gearing up for its digital release. The film, which hit theaters on June 5, 2025, is now expected to begin streaming on Netflix starting July 4, 2025, according to a recent social media post from film industry tracker Christopher Kanagaraj on X (formerly Twitter).

Thug Life brings together two of Tamil cinema's most celebrated names-Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam-for the first time since their collaboration on Nayakan (1987). Initially announced in November 2022 under the working title Kamal Haasan 234, the film gained attention as Kamal Haasan's 234th film as a lead actor. The final title was unveiled in late 2023.

The screenplay is co-written by Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam, and the film is jointly produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies. Cinematography is by Ravi K. Chandran, while A. Sreekar Prasad has handled the editing. Music is composed by A. R. Rahman, marking another collaboration between the composer and the director.

Thug Life Expected to Arrive on Netflix Earlier Than Planned

Set against the backdrop of the New Delhi underworld, the film follows Rangaraaya Sakthivel, a mafia kingpin who is forced to confront betrayal, violence, and personal loss. The narrative spans multiple decades and explores shifting loyalties within a crime syndicate, culminating in a confrontation between Sakthivel and Amaran, the man he once raised as his own.

The film features a wide ensemble cast, including Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ali Fazal, Baburaj, Rajshri Deshpande, Bagavathi Perumal, among others.

Though Thug Life ranked among the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2025, it ultimately underperformed in terms of audience reception and was considered a box office failure. The film was initially set to stream on Netflix from August 4, following an eight-week theatrical window. However, due to the tepid response in theaters, the digital release has reportedly been brought forward to July.
