Thug Life Release Nears: How Kamal Haasan's Last Two Films Fared On Day 1 At The Box Office

Thug Life sparks renewed interest in Kamal Haasan's recent box office performance: As Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan's much-anticipated gangster drama Thug Life gears up for its worldwide release on June 5, industry watchers are revisiting the box office performance of Kamal Haasan's recent major releases-Vikram and Indian 2-to understand the expectations surrounding his latest venture.
Thug Life, co-written by Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, marks the duo's reunion nearly four decades after the cult classic Nayakan (1987). The film, set to release on Thursday, June 5, features an ensemble cast that includes Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nasser, Mahesh Manjrekar, and Ali Fazal. Produced by Raaj Kamal Films International, Madras Talkies, and Red Giant Movies, Thug Life is one of the biggest Tamil film releases of 2025, both in terms of scale and anticipation.
Comparing Kamal Haasan's recent films and the anticipation for Thug Life
Kamal Haasan's last theatrical release as the lead actor was Indian 2, the vigilante-action sequel to his 1996 blockbuster Indian. Directed by S. Shankar and produced by Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies, the film opened in theaters on July 12, 2024. According to box office tracker Sacnilk, Indian 2 recorded a gross collection of ₹30.25 crore in India on its opening day.
A breakdown of Indian 2's day-one collections shows ₹13 crore from Tamil Nadu, ₹9.9 crore from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (APTG), ₹3.45 crore from Karnataka, ₹2.3 crore from Kerala, and ₹1.6 crore from the rest of India. The film went on to collect ₹95.83 crore gross in India and ₹148.83 crore worldwide, with ₹53 crore coming from overseas markets. Indian 2 struggled to meet expectations at the box office, despite a strong opening and considerable pre-release buzz.
Before Indian 2, Kamal Haasan starred in the Lokesh Kanagaraj-directed action thriller Vikram, which was released on June 3, 2022. Produced by Raaj Kamal Films International, Vikram was part of the expanding Lokesh Cinematic Universe and received both critical and commercial acclaim. According to Sacnilk, the film opened to massive numbers, with a day-one gross collection of ₹37.5 crore in India.
Tamil Nadu alone contributed ₹23.1 crore to Vikram's day-one total, followed by ₹5.2 crore from Kerala, ₹4.1 crore from Karnataka, ₹3.7 crore from APTG, and ₹1.4 crore from other parts of the country. Over time, the film became a blockbuster, earning ₹247.32 crore in India (net), ₹289.43 crore gross, and ₹414.43 crore globally. The film's budget was reported to be around ₹120 crore, and it was declared an "All Time Blockbuster" by industry analysts.
In contrast to the massive action-driven narratives of Vikram and Indian 2, Thug Life appears to lean more into the realm of a stylized gangster saga with action and emotional drama. While plot specifics have been kept under wraps, the promotional material and trailers suggest a narrative centered around power, betrayal, and conflict, with Kamal Haasan playing a gangster.
The technical team behind Thug Life includes some of the biggest names in the Indian film industry. Cinematography is handled by Ravi K. Chandran, editing by A. Sreekar Prasad, and the music is composed by A. R. Rahman, reuniting with both Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan. The film also features action choreography by Anbariv, production design by Sharmishta Roy, and costumes by Eka Lakhani and Amritha Ram. The soundscape of the film has been shaped by Oscar-winning Re-Recording Mixer Craig Mann and sound designer Anand Krishnamoorthi, with a team of engineers from AM Studios and Panchathan Record Inn contributing to the final mix.
Whether Thug Life will surpass or match the opening benchmarks set by Vikram and Indian 2 remains to be seen. The current box office climate is different from that of 2022 or 2024, with changing audience preferences and increased competition from both regional and pan-Indian films. However, the combination of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam, backed by a strong technical crew and prominent production houses, has certainly generated significant pre-release curiosity.
Early box office reports for Thug Life will emerge by the end of June 5. Meanwhile, all eyes are on how this long-awaited collaboration will be received and whether it can match Kamal Haasan's recent box office successes.
