Bharathiraja Death: Legendary Tamil Filmmaker And Actor Dies At 84
Bharathiraja Passes Away: Veteran filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja, one of the most influential figures in Indian cinema, passed away on June 10, 2026, at the age of 84. He died at his residence in Chennai following age-related health complications, bringing to a close a career that spanned nearly five decades.

The news of his demise was confirmed by the Tamil Film Producers Council. In a statement, the association expressed its condolences and noted that Bharathiraja had previously served as its president and remained one of its senior members. According to Indian Express, Bharathiraja had been battling health issues for some time and was hospitalised more than once over the past year, including for respiratory complications.
Tributes began pouring in from across the film industry soon after the news became public. Actor and politician Khushbu Sundar was among those who paid tribute, recalling Bharathiraja's contribution to cinema and the influence his work had on generations of filmmakers and movie lovers.
Bharathiraja's Career In Cinema
Born as Chinnasamy on July 17, 1941, in Theni district of Tamil Nadu, Bharathiraja became one of the most prominent filmmakers in Tamil cinema during the late 1970s. After working as an assistant to several filmmakers, he made his directorial debut with 16 Vayathinile in 1977. The film is widely regarded as a turning point in Tamil cinema for its realistic depiction of rural life and its departure from many of the conventions that dominated mainstream filmmaking at the time.
Over the years, he directed a series of notable films across genres, including Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Nizhalgal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Tik Tik Tik, Mudhal Mariyathai, Vedham Pudhithu, Karuththamma and Kizhakku Cheemayile. His films frequently explored themes related to village life, social structures, relationships and human emotions, while also venturing into thrillers and socially driven narratives.
Bharathiraja worked with several leading actors of Tamil cinema, including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Sivaji Ganesan. His influence extended beyond Tamil films, as he also directed projects in Telugu and Hindi.
His contributions were recognised with numerous honours over the years. He received six National Film Awards during his career and was conferred the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2004. He was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree by Sathyabama University in 2005.
Apart from directing, Bharathiraja built a successful second innings as an actor. He appeared in films such as Aayutha Ezhuthu, Pandianadu, Eeswaran, Thiruchitrambalam and Maharaja. His final on-screen appearance came in the Malayalam film Thudarum (2025), starring Mohanlal and Shobana.
Bharathiraja is survived by his wife Chandraleela and daughter Janani. His son, actor Manoj Bharathiraja, passed away in 2025.
