Bharathiraja Funeral: The Tamil Nadu government will accord state honours to veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja during his final journey, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced on June 10 following the director's death at the age of 84.

In a condolence message shared by the Chief Minister's Office, Vijay expressed grief over Bharathiraja's passing and extended his condolences to the filmmaker's family, friends, members of the film industry and admirers.
The Chief Minister noted that Bharathiraja had made a significant mark in Tamil cinema through films rooted in rural life and human relationships. He also referred to the filmmaker's achievements, including the Padma Shri and several national and state-level honours received during his career.
According to the statement, the government has decided to provide state honours as a mark of respect for Bharathiraja's contribution to the film industry. The announcement came shortly after news of the filmmaker's death prompted an outpouring of reactions from across the cinema and political spheres.
Later in the day, Chief Minister Vijay visited Bharathiraja's residence in Chennai and paid his respects to the late filmmaker. Visuals shared by the Chief Minister's Office showed him placing a floral wreath and offering condolences to members of the director's family.
Bharathiraja's Career And Legacy
Bharathiraja passed away on June 10 at the age of 84 after a period of ill health. The filmmaker had been facing health issues in recent months and had undergone treatment on multiple occasions before his death.
Widely known for introducing rural themes and landscapes into mainstream Tamil cinema, Bharathiraja directed several notable films during a career that spanned decades. His debut feature, 16 Vayathinile (1977), remains one of the landmark films of Tamil cinema. Over the years, he went on to direct films such as Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Mudhal Mariyathai, Vedham Pudhithu, Karuththamma and Kizhakku Cheemayile.
Apart from his work as a director, Bharathiraja was also active as an actor and appeared in several Tamil films in recent years. His contributions earned him multiple honours, including six National Film Awards and the Padma Shri.
The announcement of state honours has added to the significance of the final farewell being organised for the filmmaker. Since news of his death broke, politicians, actors, directors, musicians and members of the public have been paying tribute to him, while several leading personalities from the film industry have visited his Chennai residence to offer their condolences.
