Jana Nayagan Censor Row: Madras High Court Hearing Time Nears As Vijay Film's Release Plans Hang In Balance

Jana Nayagan Censor Row: With just days left for its scheduled theatrical release, Jana Nayagan remains at the center of a legal and regulatory standoff that has drawn close attention from both the film industry and trade circles. The Tamil political action thriller, starring Vijay, is still awaiting certification from the Central Board of Film Certification, prompting the makers to seek judicial intervention.

Jana Nayagan CBFC Row Madras High Court Hearing Time Today

The matter is currently before the Madras High Court, which is expected to take up the issue today after earlier hearings failed to bring clarity on the issuance of certification. The case has assumed urgency as the film is slated to hit theaters on January 9, coinciding with the Pongal holiday window. Until the CBFC issues its certificate, the domestic release of the film remains uncertain.

While the Indian clearance is pending, Jana Nayagan has already secured certification in overseas markets. As reported by Times Now, the film has been cleared by the British Board of Film Classification with a '15' rating. The UK regulator stated that the classification was based on the presence of strong language, frequent violence, sexual references, and depictions of drug misuse. This clearance enables the film's release in the UK, even as uncertainty continues in India.

The legal dispute stems from the producers approaching the Madras High Court after the CBFC did not issue a censor certificate despite the film being submitted more than a month ago. During earlier proceedings, the production team argued that the delay was avoidable and could disrupt release plans fixed well in advance. On the other hand, the CBFC, represented by Additional Solicitor General Sundaresan, questioned the urgency cited by the makers, pointing out that the release date was announced before the certification process had concluded.

Madras High Court Hearing Scheduled For Today

According to NDTV, the CBFC informed the court that the film would undergo a fresh review by a newly appointed committee. The Madras High Court subsequently directed the board to submit documents related to the re-examination and adjourned the hearing to January 7, scheduling it for 2:15 pm. The decision is considered critical, as certification of the Tamil version is mandatory before dubbed versions in other Indian languages can be approved.

Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, and Priyamani. The film is widely noted as Vijay's final on-screen appearance before his planned full-time entry into politics.

As the industry awaits the court's observations later today, the outcome is expected to determine whether Jana Nayagan proceeds with its planned January 9 release in India or faces further delays, despite having secured clearance in international markets.
