Jana Nayagan Release: Supreme Court Declines To Intervene, Asks Madras High Court To Decide

Jana Nayagan Release Supreme Court Hearing Update: Jana Nayagan, the Tamil political action thriller starring Vijay, will continue to face uncertainty over its release after the Supreme Court on January 15 declined to entertain a plea seeking immediate CBFC clearance for the film. The apex court has instead directed that the matter be decided by the Madras High Court, which is scheduled to hear the case on January 20.

Jana Nayagan Release Supreme Court Declines To Intervene

According to live updates reported by Live Law, a bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and A.G. Masih heard the petition filed by the film's producer, KVN Productions. The plea challenged the Madras High Court division bench's earlier decision to stay a single judge's order directing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant certification to the film.

During the hearing, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the producers, argued that the delay in certification had caused significant losses. He submitted that the film industry functions on tight release schedules and that postponements have serious financial consequences. Rohatgi contended that the makers had already accepted the cuts suggested by the CBFC's Examining Committee and that the subsequent referral to a Revising Committee was arbitrary. He described the situation as one marked by mala fide intent, pointing out that publicity had already been rolled out and that prolonged delays would affect audience interest.

However, Justice Dipankar Datta questioned the maintainability of the plea before the Supreme Court, noting that the matter was already pending before the Madras High Court division bench. The judge observed that when an issue is fixed for hearing before a division bench, the appropriate course would be to challenge the order there rather than seeking parallel relief from the apex court.

In response, Rohatgi urged the court at least to ensure that the High Court takes up the matter expeditiously, stressing that further delay would be detrimental to the producers. Taking note of this request, the Supreme Court declined to pass any substantive orders but directed the Madras High Court division bench to decide the case on January 20. The order effectively leaves the question of certification to be resolved by the High Court.

Certification Dispute and What Lies Ahead

Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, was originally slated for a January 9, 2026 release. The film ran into trouble after the CBFC chairperson referred it to a Revising Committee despite the Examining Committee recommending a U/A 16+ certificate with cuts. This move triggered legal proceedings in the Madras High Court, resulting in a series of orders and appeals.

As things stand, the film's theatrical release remains on hold. The Madras High Court's hearing on January 20 is now expected to be crucial in determining whether Jana Nayagan can secure certification and move closer to release or continue to face further delays.
