K Bhagyaraj's Career and Personal Life

Born as Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj on January 7, 1953, in Vellankoil near Gobichettipalayam, he began his journey in cinema during the 1970s. He initially worked as an assistant director under acclaimed filmmaker Bharathiraja and also appeared in small acting roles before establishing himself as a screenwriter.

Bhagyaraj made his directorial debut with Suvarilladha Chiththirangal in 1979. Over the following years, he became one of the few filmmakers who successfully combined writing, directing and acting in his own films. His works were often centred on middle-class families, everyday relationships and emotionally driven stories, blended with humour and memorable dialogues.

Among his best-known films are Mundhanai Mudichu, Andha 7 Naatkal, Thooral Ninnu Pochchu and Chinna Veedu. Several of his successful Tamil films were later remade in Hindi, expanding his reach beyond the Tamil film industry. Throughout his career, he directed more than 25 films and appeared in over 75 productions across different languages.

Apart from filmmaking, Bhagyaraj also had a brief political career, leading his own party before later associating with major political parties in Tamil Nadu. He also edited a Tamil weekly magazine and wrote novels, showcasing his interests beyond cinema.

His personal life saw both joy and tragedy. He was first married to actress Praveena, who died in 1983. He later married actress Poornima Jayaram in 1984. The couple had two children, Saranya Bhagyaraj and Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, both of whom entered the film industry.

In recent years, Bhagyaraj continued acting in supporting roles in films such as Kanithan, Thupparivaalan and Ponmagal Vandhal. His contribution to Indian cinema was recognised with several honours, including the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for Mundhanai Mudichu and the SIIMA Lifetime Achievement Award.

The state-honoured funeral marks the final farewell to a filmmaker whose career as a writer, director and actor spanned several decades.
