Directed by Venkat Prabhu, Mankatha originally released on August 31, 2011, and featured an ensemble cast led by Ajith Kumar. The film also starred Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, Lakshmi Rai, Anjali, Andrea Jeremiah, Ashwin Kakumanu, Vaibhav Reddy, Premji Amaren, Mahat Raghavendra, Jayaprakash, Aravind Akash, and Subbu Panchu. In Karnataka, pre-sales are said to have touched approximately ₹16 lakh, setting a new benchmark for re-released Tamil films in the region. The same tracker also noted that the number of shows in Tamil Nadu is relatively lower when compared to earlier re-releases such as Padayappa and Ghilli.

Additional data from industry tracker Karnataka Talkies indicates that Mankatha's final pre-sales gross in Karnataka has reached ₹16.2 lakh, marginally surpassing the pre-release booking figures of Padayappa. Meanwhile, Let's X OTT Global reported that the film has topped the list of BookMyShow pre-sales for Tamil re-releases, with over 102,000 tickets sold, ahead of titles like Ghilli, Sachin, and Padayappa.

Film industry observer Sreedhar Pillai, in a separate post, described the day as "Mankatha re-release day" and pointed out that the film has set a new advance booking record for a re-release in Tamil Nadu. He added that the film is expected to lead the box office during the opening weekend in the state, based on current booking trends.

The film's narrative follows Vinayak Mahadevan, a suspended police officer who becomes entangled in a high-stakes betting scam linked to underworld money and illegal gambling in Mumbai. As shifting alliances form between law enforcers and criminals, the story unfolds through a series of betrayals, power plays, and calculated risks, with each character pursuing personal gain.

On the technical side, Mankatha features music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, with cinematography by Sakthi Saravanan and editing handled by Praveen K. L. along with N. B. Srikanth. Sun Pictures distributed the original release.

With theaters reopening the film to audiences on January 23, the strong advance booking numbers indicate that Mankatha could see a significant Day 1 collection for a re-release. Actual box office figures, however, will become clearer once occupancy data and evening show trends are factored in.
