Mersal Re-release: Vijay-Starrer Returns To Theatres Ahead Of His First Birthday As Tamil Nadu CM

Mersal Re-release: The 2017 Tamil film Mersal, starring Vijay in three roles, is set to make its way back to theatres on June 19. The re-release comes just days before Vijay's birthday on June 22 and arrives at a time when the former actor has entered a new phase of public life as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Mersal Re-release Vijay Film Returns To Theatres

A new poster announcing the re-release has been shared by the makers, highlighting the film's return to the big screen as part of the celebrations surrounding Vijay's birthday. The renewed theatrical run gives long-time fans an opportunity to revisit the film on the big screen, while also making it accessible to viewers who may not have watched it during its original theatrical release.

Mersal Returns to Theatres Amid a New Chapter in Vijay's Public Life

Directed by Atlee and produced by Thenandal Studio Limited as its landmark 100th production, Mersal featured Vijay in a triple role, portraying a village leader named Vetrimaaran and twin brothers Maaran and Vetri. The film combined action, drama and social commentary, centering on issues related to healthcare and medical malpractice.

Alongside Vijay, the cast included S. J. Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Nithya Menen, Vadivelu and Sathyaraj in key roles. The film's music was composed by A. R. Rahman, while cinematography was handled by G. K. Vishnu and editing by Ruben.

Originally released during the 2017 Diwali season, Mersal emerged as one of the biggest Tamil hits of that year. The film recorded strong box office numbers both in India and overseas, becoming the highest-grossing film of Vijay's career at the time. It also enjoyed an extended theatrical run and later found audiences in international markets, including China and Japan.

The film also drew attention for its storyline, which addressed healthcare costs, medical negligence and corruption within the healthcare system. Vijay's dual portrayal of a doctor and a vigilante magician formed the core of the narrative, while the story gradually revealed a family tragedy that connected the film's central characters.

The re-release carries additional significance because it follows Vijay's transition from cinema to politics. After announcing his departure from acting, he launched the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and later assumed office as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister in 2026. As a result, Mersal returns to theatres at a time when its lead star is being viewed through a different public lens than when the film first premiered nearly nine years ago.

With the film set to return to cinemas on June 19, exhibitors and fans will be watching closely to see how one of Vijay's most discussed films performs during its latest theatrical outing.
