Tamil Nadu Govt Formation & New CM 2026 Highlights: Congress Supports Vijay's TVK With Conditions

According to reports, C. Joseph Vijay is unlikely to take oath as Chief Minister tomorrow as Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is reportedly not yet satisfied that Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has the required majority to form the government. Reports further suggest that although Congress has extended support to TVK, the party may need another one or two days to secure additional backing before moving ahead with government formation.

According to reports, political discussions are reportedly underway between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) amid the ongoing government formation process in Tamil Nadu. Reports suggest leaders from both parties have been in contact as part of efforts to counter the emerging Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-Congress alignment. However, no formal alliance or agreement has been officially confirmed so far.

The Governor of Tamil Nadu has dissolved the 16th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly with effect from May 5, 2026. The development comes amid ongoing efforts by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C. Joseph Vijay Vijay to form the next government following the Assembly election results.

According to reports, C. Joseph Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, to stake claim to form the government after Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly elections. However, reports suggest that the Governor is yet to be convinced that TVK currently has the required numbers to demonstrate a majority in the 234-member House. With Congress extending support, TVK’s tally has improved, but the party is still expected to seek additional backing before proving its majority on the Assembly floor.

Senior Indian National Congress leaders, including Girish Chodankar and Praveen Chakravarthy, arrived at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) headquarters in Chennai shortly after the party formally announced support for Vijay-led government formation in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, preparations are reportedly underway at Nehru Stadium ahead of TVK chief C. Joseph Vijay Vijay’s possible swearing-in ceremony, which is expected to take place tomorrow.

The Indian National Congress has officially announced its support to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) for government formation in Tamil Nadu. In a press release issued on May 6, AICC Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar stated that the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party had decided to extend full support to Vijay’s party. The statement added that the support would be conditional on keeping “communal forces” out of the alliance.

According to reports, C. Joseph Vijay is expected to meet the Tamil Nadu Governor later this evening to stake claim to form the government. Reports also suggest that Vijay had informed the Governor that Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has the required majority to form the next government in the state.

Political discussions over government formation in Tamil Nadu continue two days after the 2026 Assembly election results delivered a hung House. With Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats, focus has shifted to possible post-poll alliances. Congress, which won five seats, is reportedly weighing support for Vijay’s party, while discussions over cabinet representation and key positions are also reportedly taking place.
