Tamil Nadu New CM: Will Vijay Take Oath As Chief Minister? Rahul Gandhi Likely To Attend Swearing-In Ceremony
TVK Moves Closer To Government Formation: Political activity in Tamil Nadu intensified on May 6 as discussions surrounding government formation gathered pace following the 2026 Assembly election results. Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay is expected to take the next steps toward forming the government after the Indian National Congress formally announced support to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

Amid the latest political developments, there is also speculation that Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi could attend Vijay's possible swearing-in ceremony if the government formation process moves ahead as expected.
Preparations are reportedly underway at Nehru Stadium in Chennai ahead of a possible oath-taking ceremony on May 7. Senior Congress leaders Girish Chodankar and Praveen Chakravarthy were seen arriving at the TVK headquarters in Chennai shortly after the party officially extended support to Vijay's party.
The election verdict delivered a fractured mandate in Tamil Nadu, with TVK emerging as the single largest party in the 234-member Assembly. Contesting its first Assembly election after the party's launch, TVK secured 108 seats, falling short of the majority mark of 118 by 10 seats.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) secured 47 seats. Congress finished with five seats, while smaller parties including PMK, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML also registered victories.
With Congress extending support, attention has now shifted to whether TVK can comfortably demonstrate majority backing before staking claim to form the government.
Congress Backs TVK, Sets Conditions For Alliance
In a statement issued by AICC Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar, the Congress confirmed that Vijay had formally sought the party's support following the election verdict. The statement added that the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party had decided to back TVK in government formation.
At the same time, Congress stated that its support would depend on keeping "communal forces" away from the alliance. The party also indicated that the political understanding between Congress and TVK could continue beyond government formation and extend to future local body, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha elections.
TVK's performance has become one of the major talking points of the 2026 Tamil Nadu election. Vijay also won both constituencies he contested, Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East. Another notable result came from Kolathur, where TVK candidate V S Babu defeated Chief Minister M. K. Stalin.
As alliance discussions continue, political attention remains focused on whether Vijay will formally stake claim to form the next government and when the swearing-in ceremony will be officially confirmed.
