Tamil Nadu State Film Awards 2016 - 2022: The Tamil Nadu government has officially announced the State Film Awards covering a seven-year period, recognising films released between 2016 and 2022. The long-pending awards bring together achievements from multiple phases of contemporary Tamil cinema, acknowledging performances, filmmaking craft, and technical contributions across genres and themes. The announcement was made on Thursday, according to a report by DT Next.

As per the report by DT Next, each award consists of a gold medal weighing one sovereign, a memento, and a certificate. In the Best Film category, the first prize carries a cash award of Rs 2 lakh, while the second and third prizes include Rs 1 lakh and Rs 75,000 respectively. Several prominent actors, directors, and technicians are among the awardees across the seven years. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin will present the awards at a function to be held at Kalaivanar Arangam, Chennai, on February 13.

2016 Awards

For films released in 2016, Managaram received the Best Film (First Prize), while Puriyatha Puthir and Maaveran Kittu secured the second and third prizes respectively. Vijay Sethupathi won Best Actor for Puriyatha Puthir, and Keerthy Suresh was named Best Actress for Paambhu Sattai. Lokesh Kanagaraj earned Best Director for Managaram, and C.S. Sam won Best Music Director for Puriyatha Puthir. Robo Shankar was recognised as Best Comedian.

2017 Awards

Aramm topped the Best Film category in 2017, followed by Vikram Vedha and Tharamani. Karthi won Best Actor for Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, while Nayanthara received Best Actress for Aramm. Pushkar-Gayathri won Best Director for Vikram Vedha, and Hiphop Tamizha was awarded Best Music Director for Kavan. Bala Saravanan won Best Comedian.

2018 Awards

In 2018, Pariyerum Perumal was awarded Best Film, with Kadaikutty Singam and 96 taking second and third places. Dhanush won Best Actor for Vada Chennai, and Jyothika was named Best Actress for Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. Mari Selvaraj received Best Director for Pariyerum Perumal, and Santhosh Narayanan won Best Music Director for Vada Chennai. Yogi Babu won Best Comedian for Mohini.

2019 Awards

Asuran emerged as Best Film in 2019, followed by Otha Seruppu - Size 7 and Comali. R. Parthiban won both Best Actor and Best Director for Otha Seruppu - Size 7, while Manju Warrier was named Best Actress for Asuran. Karunakaran won Best Comedian for Monster, and D. Imman received Best Music Director for Mahaan.

2020 Awards

Koozhangal won Best Film for 2020, with Soorarai Pottru and Sandakkari securing the next two positions. Suriya and Aparna Balamurali won Best Actor and Best Actress respectively for Soorarai Pottru. Sudha Kongara won Best Director, and G.V. Prakash Kumar received Best Music Director, both for the same film. Rakshan won Best Comedian for Kannum Kannum.

2021 and 2022 Awards

For 2021, Jai Bhim topped the Best Film category, followed by Kadaisi Vivasayi and Karnan. Arya won Best Actor for Sarpatta Parambarai, and Lijomol Jose was named Best Actress for Jai Bhim. T.J. Gnanavel won Best Director, and Sean Roldan received Best Music Director. Yogi Babu won Best Comedian for Doctor.

In 2022, Karki won Best Film, with Taanakkaran and Witness taking second and third places. Vikram Prabhu won Best Actor for Taanakkaran, while Sai Pallavi received Best Actress for Karki. Gowtham Ramachandran won Best Director, A.R. Rahman was awarded Best Music Director for Ponniyin Selvan - I, and Robo Shankar won Best Comedian for Iravin Nizhal.

The list highlights a broad spectrum of Tamil cinema across seven years, marking the formal recognition of films and artistes across multiple years of Tamil cinema.
