Theri Re-Release Postponed: Vijay's Film Again Faces Delay Ahead Of Planned Theatrical Return

Theri Re-Release Postponed: The re-release of Theri, starring Vijay in the lead, has been postponed once again. The decision was confirmed on January 19 by producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu, who cited requests from other filmmakers and the production house's stated intent to support emerging talent within the Tamil film industry.

Originally scheduled to return to theatres on January 23, the re-release will now take place on a later date, which is expected to be announced soon. Thanu shared the update via a post on X, stating that the postponement followed a request from the producers of Draupathi 2 and Hotspot 2. He added that extending support to new directors, quality films, and upcoming producers remains a key priority for his banner, V Creations.

The development comes a day after filmmaker Mohan G Kshatriyan posted a public appeal on X requesting Thanu to reconsider the January 23 re-release date of Theri. In his message, Mohan sought support for Draupathi 2, urging that the postponement would help smaller films secure better screen availability. Thanu reshared the post later that night, reiterating V Creations' commitment to encouraging new voices in cinema and confirming that a fresh release plan for Theri would be communicated shortly.

This marks the second postponement for the Theri re-release. The film was initially expected to return to cinemas on January 15, 2026. However, that plan was deferred earlier this month following similar requests from producers of Pongal releases, who had raised concerns about screen space during the festive window. Thanu had then announced that the re-release would be pushed to January 23, a date that has now also been revised.

Directed by Atlee, Theri originally released in April 2016. The action thriller featured Vijay as a former police officer attempting to protect his daughter from threats linked to his past. The film also starred Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Amy Jackson, and child actor Nainika. Music for the film was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, with cinematography by George C. Williams and editing by Ruben.

A re-release trailer for Theri was unveiled on January 18, indicating that preparations for the theatrical return were already underway. With the postponement now confirmed, exhibitors and audiences are awaiting further clarity on the revised release date.
