Theri Re-Release Postponed: Vijay’s Film Put On Hold With No New Date Announced

Theri Re-Release Postponed: The planned re-release of Theri, the 2016 Tamil action thriller starring Vijay, has been officially postponed. The film was scheduled to return to cinemas worldwide on January 15, but the makers have now confirmed that the re-release will not go ahead as planned. The development comes at a time when Vijay's Jana Nayagan is facing certification-related uncertainties.

Vijay s Theri Re-Release Postponed

Theri, directed by Atlee and produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu under the V Creations banner, was originally released on April 14, 2016. The film featured Vijay alongside Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Amy Jackson, and child actor Nainika. Set around a former police officer trying to shield his daughter from threats linked to his past, the film marked Atlee's second directorial venture after Raja Rani and went on to gain wide audience acceptance during its initial run.

The decision to defer the re-release was announced by producer Kalaipuli S Thanu through a post on X on January 13. He stated that the move was taken following requests from producers of upcoming releases. According to reports, producers of other Pongal releases sought adjustments to the theatrical calendar to avoid a congested release window. Kalaipuli's post didn't mention a revised release date.

Jana Nayagan Certification Case And Legal Developments

While Theri's re-release has been paused, attention has also shifted to developments surrounding Vijay's upcoming film Jana Nayagan. According to a report by Republic, the makers of Jana Nayagan have approached the Supreme Court seeking interim relief after the Madras High Court stalled the film's certification. The report states that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had initially been directed by a single-judge bench to grant the film a U/A 16+ certificate. However, this order was later stayed by a division bench, prompting the producers to move the apex court.

Republic further reported that the CBFC has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court, requesting that no order be passed without hearing the certification authority. The dispute reportedly centers on certain scenes in Jana Nayagan that the CBFC believes could affect religious sentiments, as well as the depiction of the armed forces, for which expert opinions were sought.

Meanwhile, Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, publicly expressed support for Jana Nayagan. In a post shared on X, he criticized the move to halt the film's certification, stating that the Information and Broadcasting Ministry's actions amounted to an attack on Tamil culture and asserting that attempts to suppress the voice of the Tamil people would not succeed.

Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by Venkat K. Narayana under KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan was originally slated for a January 9 release and is being positioned as Vijay's final film before his full-time political entry.

As of January 14, both developments have added a layer of uncertainty to Vijay's theatrical slate. With no new date announced for Theri's re-release and Jana Nayagan's certification issue still under legal scrutiny, industry observers are watching closely to see how the release calendar reshapes in the coming weeks.
