Upcoming Tamil And Telugu Movies Re-releases: A Look At What's Returning To The Big Screen

Tamil And Telugu Movies Re-releases: Re-releases have increasingly become a recurring feature in the Tamil and Telugu film industries, with older titles finding renewed theatrical life years after their original runs. Fuelled by nostalgia, upgraded formats, and sustained fan interest, this trend has gained further traction in recent months, prompting distributors to revisit well-known films across languages.

Upcoming Tamil And Telugu Movies Re-releases

The most recent example is the re-release of Mankatha, starring Ajith Kumar in the lead. The Tamil action thriller, which first hit theatres in 2011, returned to cinemas in Tamil Nadu on January 23, 2026. Trade reports indicate that the film recorded encouraging numbers during its re-run, reinforcing the growing market for theatrical re-releases, particularly for films that have attained cult status over time.

'3' And 'Orange' Set For Re-release

Following Mankatha, another notable title set for a theatrical comeback is 3. The film is scheduled for a worldwide re-release on February 6. Originally released in March 2012, 3 marked the directorial debut of Aishwarya Rajinikanth and starred Dhanush alongside Shruti Haasan. The film explored the relationship between a young couple and dealt with themes of love, marriage, and mental health. While its original release generated mixed responses, the film has continued to be discussed over the years, particularly for its music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, which marked his debut. One of its songs went on to achieve global popularity, helping the film maintain visibility long after its theatrical run ended.

In Telugu cinema, Orange is also making a return to theatres in an upgraded format. The romantic drama, directed by Bhaskar, will be re-released in 4K across India from February 7, with overseas screenings planned from February 14. The film starred Ram Charan, Genelia D'Souza, and Shazahn Padamsee. Despite underperforming at the box office upon its initial release in 2010, Orange gradually developed a loyal audience and is often cited as an example of a film whose reputation improved significantly over time.

'Theri' Re-release Date Awaited

Meanwhile, not all planned re-releases have proceeded as scheduled. The return of Theri, starring Vijay, has been postponed multiple times. The film was first expected to re-release on January 15, 2026, but the date was deferred following requests from producers of Pongal festival releases. A revised plan to bring the film back to theatres on January 23 was also shelved after representations from the makers of other films releasing around the same period. As of now, the re-release has been pushed to a later date, with an official announcement still awaited. Directed by Atlee, Theri originally released in April 2016.
